Josef Rauch, a senior teacher who worked in Kaprun during the 1920s and 1930s, was an outstanding photographic pioneer of his time. He left behind approximately 900 glass negatives containing unique historical images, which the Kaprun Museum has painstakingly digitized, sorted, and supplemented with descriptive texts.
Spanning 224 pages, nearly 500 photos offer a cross-section of Josef Rauch’s photographic legacy. Compiled by Doris Junger and Michael Fazokas, the volume is complemented by an engaging biography of the multi-talented Josef Rauch.

From a mountaineering village to a world-renowned tourist destination. The construction of the power plant between 1938 and 1955 laid the foundation for Kaprun’s development as a tourist destination. To this day, it remains a defining theme for Kaprun.
This volume is, following Volume I “Josef Rauch,” the second illustrated book in a historical trilogy planned by VSF Kaprun and the Kaprun Museum. A large number of previously largely unpublished historical photographs were retrieved from the Verbund archives and digitized. The hundred-year history of electricity is thus documented in pictorial form across 292 pages.

Wayside shrines and commemorative plaques, wayside and weather crosses, works of art, and statues of saints—Kaprun is home to well over a hundred interesting objects that are closely linked to the history of the town, its residents, and its visitors. It is thanks to Kaprun nature lover Manfred Reisenhofer that knowledge of these small monuments has not been lost. The memories still visible today have been captured in words and images in this book.
