A team for our gorge

“What we do today determines what the world will look like tomorrow.” There is no better way to sum up what we have set out to achieve as the “Grüne Klamm 2025” working group than with this quote from Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach: namely, to develop measures that will help preserve the Sigmund Thun Gorge. And at the same time, to raise awareness among young and old alike of the need to treat our natural environment responsibly.

ECOLOGICALLY SUSTAINABLE

We want what we do to last. That’s why we are constantly working to keep the Sigmund Thun Gorge clean and protect nature.

Energy and waste management

We encourage car-free travel to the Gorge:

Free bus travel for mobility ticket holders. The bus stop is located very close to the entrance to the gorge.

Free e-bike charging station for anyone who cycles to the gorge.

Special service: Thanks to our bike-energy charging station, you can leave your own charger at home. The smart charging cable is suitable for (almost) all e-bikes and charges twice as fast.

Several times a day, we clean up litter that has been carelessly discarded and empty the trash cans around the Sigmund Thun Gorge, the Bürgkogel, and the Klammsee.

To prevent cigarette butts from ending up in our environment, free pocket ashtrays are available at the cash desk..

Awareness raising and communication

What does sustainability actually mean? What can individuals do to protect nature? We want to inform people and raise awareness. To this end, we are currently designing information boards along the trails and motor skills stations, brochures, promotional texts, etc.

Nature is us. Taking responsibility together means treating flora and fauna with care—and giving plants and animals back their habitat.

We can do something! Being attentive, acquiring knowledge, and developing an understanding of the sensitivity of ecosystems—that would be a good start, for example. We are happy to support people in this endeavor.

SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

Even things that seem obvious need to be taken care of. We are happy to invest our time in these valuable activities.

Safety first

We place great importance on safety and carry out the necessary maintenance work every year from October to April: we clean rocks, install safety nets, renew the jetty, and inspect the entire facility.

Safety precautions are also taken during the season in close cooperation with specialists and geologists. These include, for example, regular checks and cleaning work after summer storms.

We also maintain the paths around Klammsee lake and Bürgkogel mountain, taking care of safety railings, for example: most of Klammsee is now barrier-free accessible to all.

Preserve history

We attach great importance to history and monument preservation, not only in our Kaprun Museum, but also in the gorge, at the gorge lake, and on the Bürgkogel.

To this end, we work closely with the Kaprun Museum, where information about the construction of the Sigmund Thun Gorge is provided in pictures and text, and Celtic finds from the Bürgkogel are also exhibited.

The history of the gorge dates back to the Ice Age.

ECONOMICALLY SUSTAINABLE

Everything is easier when we work together, and when we pull together, everyone enjoys what they do more – and we are successful together.

Cooperation in the region

We work closely with local companies, particularly on annual construction and maintenance work, but also with regard to the overall infrastructure.

We rely on renewable and local resources. For example, we mainly use regional wood for the benches, footbridges, ticket booth, playground, etc.

We rely on modern processes and state-of-the-art infrastructure around the gorge and are constantly working on improvements and solutions.

Regional delicacies and organic food

The food courts around the Sigmund Thun Gorge offer regional delicacies and invite you to enjoy some refreshments. At the Schneckenreith alpine farm, cheese, butter, and bacon are even homemade. On hot summer days, the Klammseestüberl will spoil you with refreshing drinks snacks from the kitchen.

At the weekly Genussmarkt at the Kirchbichl, you can buy homemade products directly from Kaprun farmers: milk, yogurt, jams, liqueurs, venison, honey and honey products, eggs, and much more. You can also look forward to local delicacies such as Bladln, Germkrapfen, and Schwammerlragout.

A special experience awaits you every Friday at the Kirchbichl: bread baking with master baker Günther Katschner. Early in the morning, he fires up his 19th-century wood-fired bread oven in front of the Steinerbauernhaus, which also houses the Kaprun Museum. From 10 a.m., you can purchase delicious breads such as Tauern rye bread, root bread, or milk bread braid, as well as fresh Buchteln (sweet yeast rolls) or delicious nut strudel right on site—if you're lucky, they'll still be warm from the oven!
